The Gulf of Maine Research Institute’s programs are the most significant initiative in the state to educate Mainers to a better economy. According to state economist John Dorrer, 40% of the industries projected to gain jobs in Maine are based in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. However, in a recent report commissioned by Public Agenda, 41% of high school students nationally reported they would be unhappy working in a science-related job, and most of them knew little about the work lives of those who work in science fields.

GMRI is radically changing this picture with Maine's students. By working with middle school students throughout the state, GMRI is making sure that science comes alive for them, that students see the "mysteries" involved in science and learn how scientists use clues to solve mysteries. If you followed the students who attended GMRI's programs, I think you'd hear from them that science is important and relevant to their lives, and that the work of science is as intriguing as a good mystery novel. Ultimately, this engagement will translate to greater participation among Maine's students in science-related careers that benefit Maine’s economy.
