Julia Maine joined GMRI as a LabVenture! Educator in September 2016 and moved to the Aquaculture Program in November 2017. As the Aquaculture Project Manager, Julia supports the Aquaculture Program Manager to grow and advance the shellfish and seaweed industries of Maine. Her work is focused primarily on implementing the FocusMaine initiatives, developed to support and accelerate aquaculture business and grow jobs in Maine.
Julia grew up on Chebeague Island, the up-and-coming epicenter of aquaculture in Casco Bay. Summers were spent working at the Chebeague Island Boatyard, hauling lobster traps and shucking oysters. Julia’s island roots inspired her to study Earth and Oceanographic Science at Bowdoin College, where she collaborated with industry members to look at the effect of ocean acidification on oysters. Armed with her science background, Julia is excited to work on providing new opportunities to coastal communities, like the one she grew up in.
Outside of GMRI, Julia enjoys spending time in the woods, on mountains, or at the beach all year round. She also likes to create things with fabric, paint, or flour (or maybe all three!).
