The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) has emerged as a highly-effective, non-partisan, catalyst for dialogue in the Gulf of Maine region. Our community programs help to identify emerging challenges and opportunities in New England's Marine Resources and foster a climate of cooperation among a diverse mix of marine stakeholders.
We provide fishermen, scientists, resource managers, and environmentalists with a variety of forums where they can freely exchange knowledge and ideas (e.g., workshops, seminars, facilitated meetings, peer reviews, etc.). Professional development trainings prepare fishermen to take a more active role in the fishery science and management that governs their livelihood. Technical support is available to assist them in the implementation of innovative management strategies. Our assistance is regularly requested by the National Marine Fisheries Service, state agencies, the fishing industry, and other stakeholders to facilitate complex marine resource discussions. We are also working to provide the public with an informed perspective on current issues facing the Gulf of Maine.
