Findings

  • Herring accounts for up to half of the diet of lobsters in areas that are fished intensively.
  • Lobsters in Mid-Coast Maine found in fished areas grow 16% faster than lobsters inhabiting bait-free area.
  • Using 2002 growth results, we estimate that the annual bait subsidy resulted in $40 million of additional value to the fishery.
  • We are still evaluating the broader ecosystem effects:
    •  Inshore communities (sea gulls, crabs, etc.)
    •  Offshore communities (cod, whales, etc.)
