The goals of our study are to:
- characterize the two major spawning complexes of cod (i.e. their genetic variation, habitat use, and spatial behavior) in the Gulf of Maine, and
- evaluate the importance of winter and spring spawning groups to modern and historical commercial landings of cod.
This research will directly address key data gaps regarding stock complexity of cod in the Gulf of Maine and the stock composition of cod landings in the fishery. Given the current state of the resource and fishery there is a pressing need to understand the past and present ecological diversity in the system. This project was funded through the NOAA Saltonstall-Kennedy Grant Program.
