Interactions with key stakeholders in the management of alewife stocks have created opportunities for the practical application of this research. As part of a group of fish collectively called “river herring,” alewives are currently listed as a species of concern by NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service. This research has strong potential to inform conservation plans currently in development, contributing to the long-term stewardship of alewife stock populations in Maine.
