Current research at GMRI is grouped into seven research initiatives. Each of GMRI’s research initiatives can be viewed as a program of research or a collection of related research projects or activities that contribute to addressing one or more of the five research themes.
Research Initiative 1:
Biology of the key life history stages of the important species in the Gulf of Maine ecosystem.
Research Initiative 2:
The role of offshore features, e.g. banks, ledges, deep basins, cul-de-sacs, on the structure and function of the Gulf of Maine ecosystem.
Research Initiative 3:
System variability and the role of herring in the Northwest Atlantic ecosystem.
Research Initiative 4:
Developing 21st Century fishing technology to support improved fishermen’s behavior and economic efficiency.
Research Initiative 5:
Impacts of environmental (climate) change and variability on ecosystem structure and function in the Gulf of Maine.
Research Initiative 6:
Data needs and modeling approaches required to sustain key existing Gulf of Maine fisheries, e.g. lobster, cod, haddock, and monkfish.
Research Initiative 7:
Changing the fisheries management paradigm to sustain key fisheries in the Gulf of Maine.
