The Gulf of Maine Research Institute's (GMRI) science team is deepening our understanding of the dynamic systems and processes impacting life in and around the Gulf of Maine. We're providing data on critical species, essential habitats, and fundamental ecosystem functions to support informed decisions about environmental stewardship and economic growth.
Our ecosystem-based research spans every part of the Gulf of Maine water column and takes us upriver into the watershed. We are also partnering with fishermen to provide training and tools that enable them to engage productively with science and management, and to develop fishing gear and practices that are more environmentally friendly and cost effective.
GMRI's research team collaborates with the fishing community, scientists from other institutions, and government agencies to address critical information gaps. The results improve fishery management, inform sustainable seafood production, and increase understanding of potential climate change impacts.
