The Gulf of Maine Research Institute (GMRI) pioneers collaborative solutions to global ocean challenges. Our scientists explore dynamic ocean systems from marine life to environmental conditions to coastal economies. We infuse our discoveries into the policy arena and design solutions with fishermen and seafood business to protect fishery resources, harvest them responsibly, and market them as premium quality food. We share our discoveries with the public and nurture a culture of leadership in communities that depend on the sea. Our education programs cultivate science literacy and build a foundation of collaborative problem-solving among our next generation of leaders, scientists, citizens, and stewards. Each year, we serve over 25,000 stakeholders from Cape Cod to Nova Scotia.

We are seeking candidates to fill a Research Scientist position in marine resource economics. Candidates must have earned a doctoral degree and have an established research record in an appropriate scientific discipline such as resource or environmental economics as applied to problems in fisheries, aquaculture, or to coastal communities. We are especially interested in candidates who apply analytic techniques, including statistical analysis and computational or theoretical modeling, and who have expertise and experience in studying coupled natural and human systems as part of collaborative, interdisciplinary teams. In addition to a strong record of published research and funding, candidates should have an interest in the application of scientific knowledge into the management of marine resources and must be able to communicate clearly to diverse audiences, including fishery stakeholders and the general public.

GMRI has established a multi-disciplinary team with expertise in fisheries ecology, biological oceanography, fish behavior and fishing gear design, ecosystem modeling, population dynamics, and resource economics. The team has scientific interests relevant to current Gulf of Maine issues, and with personal interests in collaborating with marine stakeholders. In addition, the investigators have broad research interests beyond the Gulf of Maine to help GMRI evolve as an outward-looking institution that applies innovative approaches to marine research challenges. Such diversity in a team of scientific investigators will enable GMRI to develop interdisciplinary scientific programs that contribute to our understanding of the complex oceanographic, biological, ecological, and economic factors that are involved in the governance, use, and stewardship of marine resources in the Gulf of Maine and its watershed.

The GMRI business model provides 75% (9 months) of a research scientist’s compensation from GMRI funds per year. The balance of the scientist’s compensation (3 months) will come primarily from competitive grants initiated by each scientist, with the possibility of modest consulting income within specified limits.


Research scientists are expected to be involved in activities, other than conducting their own research projects, that support the GMRI mission in other research areas, education, and the community. Compensation for these other activities will normally come from the GMRI portion of a scientist’s compensation package.

Activities that can be covered from the GMRI portion of a scientist’s compensation package focus on the core elements of GMRI’s mission:

Research: Conducting research activities; preparing proposals for external funding; reviewing scientific manuscripts; reviewing project reports; participation on journal editorial boards; presentation of invited lectures; participation in research reviews, e.g. Center for Independent Experts and the National Science Foundation; participating in state, regional and national scientific bodies and activities.

Education: Presentation of invited lectures; participation on graduate student committees; presentation at GMRI educational activities; teaching courses at the university or community college level.

Community: Contributions to the fisheries community, e.g. serving on technical advisory groups such as Plan Development Teams or the Science and Statistical Committee of a relevant fishery management body, participating in GMRI’s convening and training programs for fishery stakeholders.; contributions to the GMRI community, e.g. organizing activities, serving on internal committees; participating in fund-raising activities, presenting to donor events, etc.; contributions to the wider community, e.g. presenting public lectures, helping with tours, etc.

These areas are illustrative only, and not meant to be all inclusive, and Research Scientists are not expected to contribute to each of the specific areas under these three themes. Details will be specified in each Scientist’s annual performance objectives.

Required Qualifications

GMRI’s economist must have earned a doctoral degree and have an established research record in an appropriate scientific discipline. They will have an interest in applied research and policy analysis relating to management of marine resources and marine ecosystem services. We are seeking a scientist who is flexible and creative and who will contribute to GMRI’s highly collaborative research program. Our team has developed a strong reputation in coupled natural and human systems research, and we envision this position being a focal point for collaboration. While we are open to a wide range of research foci, we are particularly interested in questions related to:

  • Climate impacts and climate adaptation
  • The process of decision-making and collaboration around complex environmental issues
  • Human uses of the marine environment, including valuation of ecosystem services

We are also especially interested in candidates who have incorporated theoretical or simulation modeling or “big-data” techniques into their research.


The roles and responsibilities of research scientists are detailed below in each of the following four areas – (1) scientific leadership; (2) staff management; (3) project management; (4) service to the community

1. Scientific Leadership:

  • Acting as the "champion" for their area of science, both within and outside GMRI, ensuring the cohesiveness and quality of the science, generating/fostering new ideas and innovation, and promoting interactions with other GMRI science areas
  • Conducting leading edge research, and actively promoting participation in the regional, national, and international science communities
  • Publishing research results in the primary literature
  • Disseminating research results through the secondary or gray literature; scientific conferences, symposia, and workshops; presentations to meetings of management agencies
  • Maintaining an overview of the current strategies and directions of the funding agencies in their area of science, and liaising with the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), Chief Community Officer, and Chief Education Officer on strategic directions and needs
  • Actively pursue sources of competitive funding from outside agencies. Each research scientist is expected to contribute to attaining the external funding targets in the GMRI organizational business model
  • Working with the Chief Development Officer and staff to identify and pursue non-agency funding for research
  • Leading and securing funding for a small group of research staff who will assist Research Scientists in their role where appropriate
  • Working with the CSO and other GMRI leadership and staff to ensure that research is end-user relevant, high quality, consistent with GMRI strategies and directions, and that collaboration with other research providers is promoted. This may require re-prioritizing and changing directions as appropriate.
  • Contributing to the development of strategic and operational plans
  • Coordinating the preparation of annual budgets in their area of research
  • Providing information on their projects to the CEO, COO, and CSO as requested

2. Staff management:

  • Facilitating general communication within their science area, fostering staff involvement in strategic initiatives, holding routine briefing meetings to ensure that staff are informed of relevant policies and procedures
  • Monitoring the well-being of staff in their group and ensuring they are making a positive contribution to GMRI's scientific and business goals
  • Monitoring staff workloads and helping to resolve staffing allocation conflicts
  • Mentoring staff, taking an interest in the work they are doing, encouraging an innovative and entrepreneurial approach, and gently guiding them in their roles in GMRI as necessary
  • Conducting annual performance reviews for staff in their group as required by the CSO and ensuring that non-project objectives are set
  • Identifying career aspirations of staff in the group and encouraging their personal growth, so that their careers and training directions meet both their personal ambitions and GMRI's strategic plans and directions
  • Working with the CSO to manage and resolve any performance management issues and conflicts related to staff members work priorities, progress or quality in a manner which is sensitive yet firm
  • Overseeing health and safety of staff to ensure compliance with GMRI's health and safety policies and practices
  • Fostering an entrepreneurial and innovative culture within their team and the wider GMRI community

3. Project Management:

  • Maintaining an overview of allocated projects and ensuring all stages of the Project Management System are completed
  • Monitoring overall progress (scientific & financial) of all relevant projects in association with support staff
  • Providing accurate exception reporting and advance warning to the CSO and Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) on project deviations
  • Monitoring that contracted outputs are delivered to the required quality, on time, and within budget
  • Coordinating contracts, reports, reviews and any other documentation required by funding agencies in the appropriate format and to the appropriate standard by the due date
  • Maintaining an overview of projects and budgets, notifying the CSO of any significant changes in key personnel or project milestones, and managing project subcontractors and collaborators and their delivery of outputs where appropriate

4. Service to the Community:

Research scientists are expected to fill roles and responsibilities in some, but not all, of the following areas, consistent with their skills, expertise, and experience.

  • The Science Community
    • Supervising post-doctoral associates, graduate students, and interns who are participating on research projects
    • Reviewing scientific manuscripts and project reports
    • Participating on journal editorial boards
    • Presenting invited scientific lectures
    • Participating in research reviews
    • Participating in state, regional and national scientific bodies and activities
  • The Marine Resource Community
    • Contributing to the sustainable management of fisheries in the Northeast US and the North Atlantic by participating in technical committees
    • Collaborating with GMRI’s Community Program’s marine stakeholder convening and training
    • Contributing to the sustainable development of the coastal environment by supporting GMRI’s aquaculture and sustainable seafood programs
    • Contributing to the activities of other marine non-profits active in the Gulf of Maine region
  • Students and the Public
    • Presenting public lectures and science cafes
    • Representing GMRI to the wider community
    • Collaborating with GMRI’s Education program to develop presentations or materials for K-12 students, teachers, and the general public
  • The GMRI community
    • Contributing to the GMRI community, e.g. organizing GMRI activities, serving on internal committees
    • Participating in fund-raising activities, such as presenting to donor events, helping with foundation proposals, or meeting with individual supporters
    • Helping with tours of GMRI, such as “Lunch and Learn”
