Fishery dependent data is essential to the sound management and sustainability of commercial fisheries. NOAA leadership in the Greater Atlantic Region has identified modernizing fishery dependent data systems as an opportunity to create efficiencies and support catch accounting, stock assessments, and fine-scale management approaches through timely and accurate information.
To better understand the needs of the fishing industry, dealers, fishery managers, and other key stakeholders, we are working with NOAA Fisheries and the School for Marine Science and Technology (SMAST) on a multi-phased process to holistically review fishery dependent data collection methods and systems across New England and the Mid-Atlantic regions. This project aims to develop a catalogue of data needs for fishery dependent data users, understand how it can be collected accurately, and determine how it can be made more accessible to end users.
