Groundfish fishermen have endured dramatic declines in catch allocations for traditional New England species such as cod. Their survival depends on their ability to evolve more efficient and profitable business models.

We are exploring such factors as the seasonality of fishing activity, dependence on specific stocks, lease/trade of quota among sectors, auction market response to changes in landings, and opportunities to develop higher value niche markets. We are also working to help fishermen and managers improve the cost-effectiveness of at-sea monitoring, and to identify operational and business improvements. 

The seafood is vitally important to New England. We are working alongside seafood businesses ― from fishing vessels all the way through the supply chain to grocery stores and restaurants — to develop new practices and technologies to enable boat-to-plate traceability and expose consumers to a wider array of Gulf of Maine seafood.
