The need to discover, access and integrate data from disparate sources is an essential element in development of decision support tools. Recent products produced by the Ocean Data Products team demonstrate elegant solutions to the integration of complex data including: long time series of climatology trend data from real-time observation buoys, visualizations from model forecast and satellite data, extraction of data from point locations from real-time NEXRAD precipitation data and forecast model data. The complexity of individual data systems varies, as does the size and quality of the data.
Recent data integration projects include:
- NERACOOS Data Framework – Development of a robust data management framework for NERACOOS (Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal and Ocean Observing Systems) data that serves as the foundation for serving the highest quality data through the NERACOOS data portal and to products and services that consume these data. The framework leverages a suite of data standards developed, adopted and recommended by OGC (The Open Geospatial Consortium) and NOAA’s Integrated Ocean Observing System.
- Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS©) Data Catalog, Registry and Viewer – Developed standards-based software and services to access and distribute data from the IOOS national network of observing assets through a single point of access.
- CINAR “Integrated Rapid-Response Observations and Ocean Ensemble Optimization to Improve Storm Intensity Forecasts in the Northeast U.S.” project - Providing the data management framework and working with CINAR (Cooperative Institute of the North Atlantic Region) data providers to make real-time data available during storm deployments.
With expertise from metadata creation, data standards development and implementation, to cloud computing, the ODP Team has become a leader in the ocean observing space and works to extend this capacity to other areas important to GMRI.
