The ultimate goal of all GMRI Seafood programs is to achieve an economically and ecologically thriving and stable seafood industry. To achieve this goal, the Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested brand program commits to the following strategies:

Empowering consumers

Seafood lovers want to eat seafood they can feel good about. The Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested label tells you that the seafood you’re buying is traceable to the Gulf of Maine region and that the species meets criteria around responsible harvest.

Rewarding the seafood and fishing industries

The global seafood industry is massive, and information is power. When consumers eat Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested seafood, it gives them a way to vote with their wallets to reward the hard work of the fishing industry and the seafood supply chain here in the region. Fishermen in the Gulf of Maine abide by strict regulations on verified species, including how much they can catch. Processors in the middle of the supply chain maintain important shoreside infrastructure and jobs in our region’s ports, and can provide traceability information as seafood makes its way up the supply chain.

Motivating continuous improvement

The Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested brand intends to reward and enable efforts to improve the quality, traceability, and environmental impact of harvesting, growing, procuring, or selling seafood. To that end, participants in the program identify and implement measurable and achievable improvements to the sustainability of their businesses and the seafood they source.

Embracing a shared identity

Our region’s fishermen, seafood companies, and ports are inextricably tied together, given the nature of how fish are regulated – and even more simply, because of how fish move, ignoring state boundaries. Once landed, seafood continues to be a regional product, as boats might land their catches in different ports on different days and processors purchase from multiple ports. We believe we can achieve greater impact when we work together, and we hope the Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested brand can help unite the region around a shared identity.
