Our Approach
Our work is locally focused and globally relevant. The solutions we develop here both inform — and are informed by — those developed around a rapidly changing world.
Since we first opened the doors to our lab in 2005, we've taken on the most pressing challenges facing the Gulf of Maine and the world's oceans more broadly.

Our Divisions
We are science-based and community driven. We have our greatest impact when we turn knowledge into action by deepening our understanding through a mix of research and community-held knowledge, and then develop and deliver solutions in the many communities we partner with. These capacities, and the divisions they're managed in, combine within each of our strategic initiatives to advance our mission.
-
Science Division
Conducting transdisciplinary research across biological, physical, and social sciences to deepen our understanding and deliver that information to the people who need it most.
-
Impact Division
We turn knowledge into action to ensure communities can create and access the information, resources, and relationships they need to make important decisions.
Our Values
-
Science
We support independent, evidence-based decision-making that recognizes indigenous knowledge and lived experience.
-
Innovation
We pursue innovative solutions to complex challenges through transdisciplinary work that is focused on a sustainable, resilient future.
-
Transparency
We share information clearly and objectively to enable decision-making and build trust.
-
Relationships
We respect and hold ourselves accountable to one another and the communities we serve, with integrity, to advance a thriving marine environment for current and future generations.
-
Collaboration
We strive to make a difference and know we can do more together than on our own; we are humble and eager to learn in our pursuit of excellence.
-
Inclusion
We value diverse perspectives and aspire to create an inclusive environment where ideas, experiences, and viewpoints are shared and respected.
