Maine Aquaculture Apprenticeship Program
Cultivating Maine's next generation of aquaculture professionals.
The Registered Aquaculture Apprenticeship Program is a first-of-its-kind workforce development initiative designed to train the next generation of aquaculture professionals in Maine. It provides a structured pathway for aspiring farmers to gain hands-on experience, technical skills, and industry knowledge needed for long-term careers in aquaculture. This earn-while-you-learn model ensures that apprentices are fully immersed in the working realities of aquaculture while receiving mentorship and support.
Project Goals:
- Support Maineās working waterfronts and blue economy by increasing farm training capacity, reducing entry barriers for new workers, and building a resilient, locally trained aquaculture workforce.
- Develop and pilot a Maine Department of Labor-registered Aquaculture Apprenticeship Program that provides hands-on experience, mentorship, and training aligned with defined occupational competencies in shellfish and seaweed farming.
- Foster strong partnerships between farms, educational institutions, nonprofits, and government agencies to build a coordinated aquaculture training pipeline.
- Update and align with Maineās Aquaculture Occupational Standards for shellfish, seaweed, finfish, and recirculating systems to ensure workforce training remains current with industry advancements.
The Maine Aquaculture Apprenticeship Program is a registered apprenticeship through the Maine Department of Labor designed to equip aspiring aquaculture professionals with the skills and experience needed to thrive in Maine's growing shellfish and seaweed farming sectors. Created in collaboration with the Maine Department of Labor, the Maine Aquaculture Association, Southern Maine Community College (SMCC), and Educate Maine, the program combines hands-on training with structured classroom instruction to foster a well-rounded workforce.
The Maine Aquaculture Apprenticeship consists of 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training (OTJ) and 144 hours of related technical instruction (RTI). The program takes 12 to 18 months to complete, depending on farm operations and seasonal factors. To support participation, each apprentice receives a stipend to help offset the time spent in classroom training. We also provide each apprentice with essential gear, including boots, bibs, a foul-weather jacket, and a life jacket (PFD). In recognition of their role in training and mentoring, host farms receive a stipend for participating in the program.
The paid OTJ hours are structured around key skill areas to ensure apprentices gain a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience. These skills are based on the Maine Aquaculture Associationās Occupational Standard and include:
- Organizational and safety protocols
- Vessel and vehicle operation
- Use and maintenance of tools and equipment
- Shellfish and seaweed production and management
- Shellfish and seaweed health
- Food safety and regulatory compliance
To complement hands-on experience, apprentices also complete 144 hours of RTI or classroom-based learning from a range of industry and academic partners. These courses, delivered in partnership with SMCC and industry experts, cover:
- Introduction to aquaculture practices
- Vessel operation and maintenance
- Seaweed and shellfish aquaculture techniques
- Farm tours and facility field trips
- Online learning modules and in-person lectures
This apprenticeship program is a cornerstone of the Maine Aquaculture Workforce Development Strategy, aiming to address the industry's labor needs by providing structured, competency-based training. By fostering partnerships between educational institutions, industry stakeholders, and government agencies, the program ensures that Maine's aquaculture workforce is prepared to meet current demands and future challenges.
