Panel Event: Bridging Cultures and Building Community through Local Seafood

Event ticket proceeds ($20/person) will be donated to Food For All, directly benefiting their food pantry that distributes to families across the Greater Portland area.

Food is a language we all speak. Local seafood is part of a commitment in Maine schools to serve recipes that represent all student backgrounds, including those from immigrant families, who often come from cultures where people eat more seafood than in the US Fish is also halal, providing a critical option for a growing population of Muslim students who often struggle to find food they can eat in their cafeterias.

For the seafood industry, putting more local seafood onto students’ plates is a valuable way to educate young people about the economic, community, and personal health benefits of eating (more) local fish, as well as an opportunity to build demand for the diversity of species we have here in the Gulf of Maine.

Join us for a conversation with the people directly involved in this exciting work:

  • Khadija Ahmed, founder/executive director of Food For All Services
  • Mary Emerson, school nutrition director of Westbrook Public Schools
  • Mary Hudson, director of fisheries programs at the Maine Coast Fishermen's Association
  • Sophie Scott (moderator), sustainable seafood program manager at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute
