Fisheries Strategies for Changing Oceans and Resilient Ecosystems by 2030 (FishSCORE2030)

Contributing to the UN Decade of Ocean Science.

FishSCORE2030 was endorsed as a decadal program by the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. This program will build a global network of scientists, stakeholders, and practitioners to identify approaches to sustain marine fisheries, protect ocean ecosystem health, and secure equitable benefits from fisheries in a changing ocean.

Program Goals:

  • Develop a global research network of scientists, fishery stakeholders, management and community practitioners, and policymakers to collaborate on information and frameworks for supporting climate resilient fisheries.
  • Develop information and tools for assessing climate impacts, vulnerabilities, capacities, and resilience in marine fishery systems.
  • Apply frameworks and tools in fishery systems around the world to identify approaches for strengthening climate resilience, and use insights from these application experiences to iteratively improve the tools and application protocols.
  • Develop the scientific foundation and implementation approaches needed to achieve healthy marine ecosystems, vibrant fisheries, and equitable benefits in the context of climate-driven changes in our world’s oceans.

Fisheries Strategies for Changing Oceans and Resilient Ecosystems by 2030

Fisheries Strategies for Changing Oceans and Resilient Ecosystems by 2030 (FishSCORE) will sustain fisheries as a global source of food and jobs, while protecting ocean ecosystem health and enhancing equitable benefits from fisheries. This Decade program will bring together scientists, resource managers, community practitioners, fishing sector participants and the wider fishing community, and policymakers to transition marine fisheries towards climate resilience. We will co-develop frameworks and assemble a database of resources to assess vulnerabilities and resilience attributes, determine actionable adaptation options, and identify resilience-enhancing measures for fishery systems. We will build scientist-practitioner partnerships as we co-develop, apply, and improve these frameworks. FishSCORE will help identify strategies that work in the real world to achieve healthy ecosystems, resilient fishery systems, and equitable benefits in the context of changing oceans.

What is the FishSCORE Network?

The FishSCORE Network is a forum for information exchange about climate-ready fisheries strategies through workshops, seminar series, and virtual meetings that will inform science-to-practice climate adaptive fisheries strategies. The Network will:

  • Create opportunities to facilitate information exchange and learning about climate and fisheries.
  • Support collaborative projects and partnerships to learn more about how climate change is impacting different fisheries and how fisheries are transforming to adapt to new conditions.
  • Encourage the exchange of results and local/regional experiences to scale local lessons up to global understanding of climate-resilience in fisheries.

This Network will provide an opportunity to increase collaborative work and communication across geographies and disciplines to develop information and design frameworks for assessing and enhancing climate adaptation in local and regional marine fisheries.
